What types of technologies are commonly applied in JI projects?
Projects under Joint Implementation are often related to energy efficiency improvements and industrial conversion. The emphasis on the rapid expansion of heavy industry throughout the communist era, and the use of inferior building materials as part of this phenomenon, has created the potential to upgrade existing industrial processes, distribution networks, and buildings. Apart from recovering fugitive emissions from the sources listed above, there is considerable potential to improve plant efficiency by reusing waste energy and switching to less carbon intensive fuel inputs. The largest number of JI reduction opportunities relates to the oil and gas and power generation sectors. Specific examples of technologies or emission reduction strategies that are particularly relevant for Eastern Europe include: district heating, capturing fugitive methane emissions from pipelines, and coal bed methane injection.
