What types of surgeries are done for breast cancer?
There are two main types of surgeries done for breast cancer: breast conserving surgery (lumpectomy) and mastectomy. Lumpectomy removes the breast cancer only and mastectomy the whole breast. Both operations require surgical evaluation of the lymph nodes under the arm, may require radiation and may require some form of chemotherapy. Especially when diagnosed early, most ladies have the option of breast conserving surgery.
