What types of soil conservation practices do farmers use?
Information on the use of conservation practices has only been collected in the last two censuses (1991 and 1996). Crop rotation is the most widely used practice for soil conservation by Canadian farmers. Next is the no-till or low-till method. Use of the other practices is significantly lower, with the exception of permanent grass cover (29%). (Permanent grass cover was not included in the 1991 Census so there is no way to measure whether its use has increased or decreased.) New soil conservation practices and their use by farmers will help ensure a sustainable soil resource for the future of agriculture in Canada.
