1. Presidential Preference Primary: In Florida, this primary is held on the second Tuesday in March of presidential election years per ยง103.101(1), F. S. A presidential election year is always a year in which the number is evenly divisible by four. This primary is a “beauty contest” of the candidates identified as presidential hopefuls. Votes cast for a presidential contender are actually votes cast for the delegates pledged to that candidate. Unless a political party has several candidates seeking the presidential nomination, the voters affiliated with that party have nothing on which to vote. Local governments sometimes place referendum questions on this primary ballot. When that occurs, all voters registered by the book closing are eligible to vote on the question. Judicial candidates do not appear on this ballot. The winner of this primary is determined by a plurality.
