What types of plastics does Waukesha County accept for recycling?
While every community in Wisconsin is required to make recycling of certain items available to their residents, 25 of the 37 communities in Waukesha County participate in a countywide recycling program in which proceeds from the sale of recycled materials are split among the participating municipalities. The county’s recycling program takes No. 1 and No. 2 plastic bottles, jars and jugs. That may not seem like much; after all, there are seven resin classifications used for plastic packaging material. However, according to information from the county’s recycling department, 90 percent of plastic bottles and jugs are No. 1s and No. 2s. Waukesha County doesn’t take other types of plastics because at this time, there simply isn’t a market to sell them, said Karen Fiedler, a solid waste supervisor for the county.
