What types of message are suited to signage?
Signage is used to communicate litter messages in a number of ways that are best kept separate so that messages on one sign do not compete for attention or confuse with another message. Some distinct types of messages are: • Positive messages imploring people to do the right thing, such as ‘Don’t Waste Victoria. Do The Right Thing’. • Negative messages highlighting penalties, such as ‘Litter only. Commercial and residential rubbish prohibited. $200 on the spot fine’. • Neutral messages educating or instructing people about expected actions without penalty messages or positive reinforcement of doing the right thing, such as ‘Place picnic litter in bins provided’.
