What types of gases are produced from a volcano?
gases vary considerably from volcano to volcano, some may emit more water vapour and chlorine and these gases can represent more than 60% of the eruption. However in general, many gases are in evidence. As well as water vapour and Carbon Dioxide there is nitrogen, argon, helium, neon, methane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, sulphur hexachloride, carbonyl sulfide, and even traces of mercury. Some volcanic gases were collected and anylased as long ago as 1790 in Italy.
