What Types of Fungus Grow Around Toes?
Trichophyton rubrum is the main fungus affecting the feet. It causes both Athlete’s foot (Tinea pedis) and Ringworm (Dermatophytosis). Onychomycosis (Tinea Unguium) is caused by dermatophytes, a type of fungus that lives on the keratin of the toenails. Trichophyton rubrum is one of several dermatophytes that can cause onychomycosis. Other possible dermatophytes include Trichophyton interdigitale, Epidermophyton floccosum, Trichophyton violaceum, Microsporum gypseum and Trichophyton tonsurans.
