What types of food is cooked for Christmas in Guatemala?
In Guatemala they do things very differently for Christmas. For instance, they put their presents around a shrub, the “markio” shrub, indegenous to their area. As for foods, however, they boil the seeds of the markio shrub in a thick, garlicy oil over an open fire. The sweet seeds are meant to represent the coming year and the sweetness of new experiences, while the oil is the hardships we all must overcome to get to that sweetness.
