What types of flu vaccines are available?
Two types of flu vaccine exist. One is the traditional flu vaccine or “flu shot,” which is given with a needle. This flu vaccine does not contain a live virus and cannot cause the flu. Instead, this flu vaccine contains an inactivated virus. The other is a nasal flu vaccine called FluMist. FluMist is not recommended for people with asthma. This flu vaccine contains weakened viruses, which usually do not cause illness, but in rare instances they can cause flu. The nasal flu vaccine is recommended only for individuals 2 to 49 years of age who have no chronic medical problems and are not pregnant.
