What Types Of Driving Adaptations Are There?
Driving Adaptations • Automatic Transmission – replaces a clutch and manual shift • Power Steering – permits one hand steering wheel operation • Power Brakes – needed for hand controls and our adaptive aids • Steering Devices – a spinner knob, amputee ring or custom device • Modified Effort Steering – reduces by 40 – 70% the strength needed to operate power steering • Left Foot Accelerator – eliminates left leg cross-over • Foot Pedal Extension – raise height of brake and accelerator • Hand Controls – right control usually governs steering, left control operates brake/accelerator with a single lever and activates secondary controls such as the horn, wipers and turn signal • Left-Hand Gear Selector – permits left hand operation • Right-Hand Turn Signal – right hand operation without crossover • Remote Switches – reposition secondary controls to accommodate driver’s specific disability • Seat Belts – should a lap belt adjustment be needed.
