Contact lenses come in a variety of types, materials, and uses. Most patients are fit into some type of disposable soft contact lens. The advantage of soft disposable contacts is related to ocular health. A cleaner lens is a healthier, more comfortable lens. Even with proper care and cleaning, contact lens comfort and safety decreases the longer the lens is worn before it is replaced. Soft disposable contact lenses generally are healthy, comfortable, convenient, and affordable. Rigid gas permeable lenses (RGP’s) are also an option. Generally the vision achieved with RGP’s are superior compared to soft contact lenses and even glasses. The trade off with RGP’s is that the adaption phase is generally a bit longer and lens awareness, in the beginning, can be a little more obvious.
