What types of construction in Belmont require a building permit?
It’s much easier to list things that DO NOT require a permit: • Fences 6 feet tall or shorter. • Fences and retaining walls are limited to 3 feet in height in the front yard when your property is within 40-feet of a street intersection. • Retaining walls 4 feet tall or shorter, measured from the bottom of the footing or post to the top of the wall. All retaining walls that support a surcharge require a permit, regardless of height. • Painting and wallpapering. • Walks and driveways NOT more than 30 above grade, and NOT above a basement or story. • Free-standing sheds less than 120 square feet. • And a few other things like water tanks and oil derricks! In general, any mechanical or structural work (like cabinets, doors, windows, roofs, etc.), plumbing work (sinks, toilets, irrigation, water heaters, etc.), or electrical work (appliances, furnaces, garage door openers, pool pumps, etc.) requires a building permit.
