What type of US visa would i need?
If you are from a visa waiver country, you do not need a visa. If you have a return ticket and sufficient funds to cover your trip, you will be admitted for 90 days. That period of time cannot be extended. You may have to prove on entry that you have enough money, that you have a schedule / plan for your visit. And you absolutely need to have a return ticket. Also, it might not be a good idea to say that you are visiting your boyfriend. They might suspect that you intend to immigrate, and that can mean anything from a warning to actually not being admitted into the country. You are invited to stay with a friend and his family, that should be enough information.

You just need your passport to get a TOURIST VISA when you get to passport control they will STAMP THE VISA on your passport.. right there in the space marked VISAS.
