Bi-metal control thermometers. They are made from two strips of different metals joined together. When the strip is heated, one metal expands more than the other type, causing the strip to bend towards the side with the least expansion. At some point in the movement the metal will interact with a sensor which, in turn may control a switch which turns off or regulates the heat source.
