What type of substrate should be used?
The best substrate for many monitors is dirt. You can dig up your own dirt; this makes it both free and unlimited. Monitors recognize particular types of dirt as being usable, especially for nesting. Therefor some experimentation may be need to find the appropriate dirt. Another good substrate, particularly for forest dwelling monitors is leaf litter. This substrate will hold moisture well and will allow for burrowing.
