What type of students attend charter schools?
The more than 32,000 students who attend New York City’s charter schools come from all backgrounds and ethnicities, and include a higher percentage of blacks and Latino students than traditional New York City public schools. There are 62.7% African American students in New York City’s charter schools, compared with 30.9% in traditional public schools. Charter schools provide educational alternatives for families at all income levels, and have close to the same percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch as traditional New York City public schools. 71.4% of students at New York City’s charter schools qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, just one percent greater than those eligible at traditional public schools.
