What type of shark washed up on the shores of New York?
A 20-foot-long basking shark washed ashore at Gilgo State Park Tuesday morning, according to a park official. The shark was dead by the time the state parks department was notified, said parks spokesman George Gorman. After the investigation, the shark’s body will be buried. Tracy Marcus of Cornell Cooperative Extension told The Associated Press the shark likely had some kind of illness. There are no propeller wounds that might have come from a boat, nor are there any puncture wounds on the animal, according to the AP, which indicated that the shark was alive when it first washed up. Basking sharks eat plankton and are not considered dangerous. Sources: http://www.newsday.com/news/local/ny-lishar0715,0,5493341.
