What type of services do EAMTs provide?
Our EAMTs primarily treat domestic animals, although they may be called upon occasionally to assist wildlife, non-domesticated birds and waterfowl, livestock and reptiles. EAMT services include on-scene treatment such as placing catheters, starting IVs for fluid therapy, performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), bandaging wounds, splinting broken bones or administering medication the very types of procedures that human-service paramedics perform at accident and other trauma scenes! While performing these procedures, EAMTs are communicating by radio with the veterinary team in our Second Chance Animal Hospital. Most animal patients are transported to our shelter, where they are examined and treated by our veterinary staff. Additionally, EAMTs provide technical rescue assistance (such as water rescues, tree rescues and extrications) for animals caught in precarious and life-threatening situations. And, they partner with local law enforcement agencies to investigate suspected cases
