What type of server does Americart run on, and how is it hooked to the internet?
A16: The main cartserver is a dedicated system with a superfast Intel Xeon Server processor, 2G memory, and 10,020 rpm (5.6ms average seek!) disk drives. It runs FreeBSD Unix, the most stable web server OS in the world, and is hooked to the web through multiple T3 connections at Pair Networks. You should realize that this is NOT a multi-user rental machine where the cart competes with other people’s web pages for processing power. It runs on its own hardware, and spends most of its time waiting around for YOUR customer to put something in their cart, and then responds very quickly. The cartserver is supported by two other dedicated servers for outbound email, graphic file serving, and other ancillary services. One of the two can also serve as the alternate cartserver in certain situations.
