It is meant to be eaten on a plain, white, slightly-sweet hamburger bun. Nothing else is an acceptable substitute if tradition is your goal. However, that said, my wife and I have become fond of pulled pork, with a light vinegar based sauce, on a whole grain wheat roll made by a local supermarket bakery.
