What type of research goes into the creation of the G.I. Joe comics?
HAMA: I amassed a lot of research material during the materials that I did it because there was a military bookstore four blocks away from Marvel. I could just walk over there during lunch. I built up this library over the years. Ive sort of tried to keep up with it. Technology is advancing and terminology changes. All the SOPs [standard operating procedures] and the uniforms are in constant flux. You have to keep up with it. You just have to have the reference material. Why did you feel it was so important to create strong female characters like Scarlett and Lady Jaye in G.I. Joe? HAMA: It wasnt just females. It was strong characters that were Hispanic and Asian and whatever. I felt that it was important to diversify. I felt it was important to have women characters that didnt have their palms nailed to their foreheads all the time like I saw in the other comics around me.
