Use an oil based enamel paint. This paint is durable, will adhere well to the metal, and is usually the type of paint used to paint metal chests and boxes. If you are doing a decorative project, head to an art store for smaller quantities and more color and finish choices. If you’re finishing many boxes, head to the hardware store and pick up a gallon of Rustoleum oil based enamel.
