What type of music genre is “New York New York” by Frank Sinatra?
The thing is, this is a vocal of what is also referred to as the “Big Bands” of the 30’s and 40’s. Think Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman here. These bands played instrumental dance music, but also included vocals, which also were good dance tunes. I do NOT know if the “Big Bands” is a genre, but that is the type of musical numbers that were being at the time in the dance halls. New York, New York was just such a musical vocal dance number which happened to appear in a movie which was quite popular. Personally, I simply LOVE the big number dance and song musicals of the 30’s and 40’s, especially the musicals where Busby Berkeley did the choreography. It was a time of dreaming, dreaming of the better things in life and the movies of the time were an escape mechanism of the times which were very hard indeed.
