What type of lab results will require trending to meet Meaningful Use (and thus should be reported to the EHR in HL7 format)?
In the first 2 years, “Meaningful Use” will require that the physician trend HbA1C and LDL. Not all lab results will require trending, but all the lab results are to be reported back to the EHR in HL7 format for numeric and positive/negative values. Note: Lab ordering and results are associated with 7 of the 25 meaningful use guidelines, demonstrating the importance of lab interoperability with and EHR for fulfilling meaningful use criteria.
