What type of intraocular lenses are available?
There are many types of intraocular lenses. Again, the type to be used is individualized for each patient. Most intraocular lenses are made of a special plastic material. One of the newest types is a foldable silicone lens, which can be inserted through about a 3.25 millimeter incision, and requires only one or two stitches to close. “No stitch” techniques are used however for better safety we prefer to place one or two safety stitches. Top How is the power of the implant determined? In order to determine the proper power implant to be used, the patient is tested with special ultrasound equipment before surgery. At the Eye Surgery Institute, we have the latest ultrasound equipment for this purpose. Ultrasound also tests the condition of the back of the eye. Using sound waves, ultrasound testing is a safe way to measure the length of the eye and see the back of the eye through the cataract. The data is collected and programmed into a computer which calculates the power of the implant. T
