What type of houses were lived in the new england colonies?
In New England colonial houses were of post-and-beam construction with a central brick chimney with fireplaces let in at every level. The rear extended into a kitchen area giving the building its “saltbox” shape. The roof was high-pitched to shed snow. Small casements held windows using small diamond-shaped panes. Outer walls were clapboards. The main door was thick and often studded with iron as a defense. A good existing example is the House of Seven Gables in Salem, Mass.
