There are hundreds of genetic disorders that have cleft lip/cleft palate associated with them. Cleft lip and cleft palate can also occur spontaneously or as a result of trauma, infections, or toxins affecting the mother at exactly the right (or wrong, depending on how you look at it) time. Many children are born with a cleft lip/palate with no other genetic disorder, but if your child is born with this defect, it is advisable to have genetic testing done to rule out any disorders.
