Brass: too soft, you’ll ring off more heads than a chicken factory. Silicone Bronze: Top of the line, long-lasting. A must for saltwater boats, but for trailered boats and small craft, it becomes an issue of cost/benefit (see discussion on marine ply). The trade-off is that they are expensive and you won’t likely find them at a local hardware store, so plan to order them before you start your project. Stainless Steel: Not a bad choice, but believe it or not, it does corrode when deprived of oxygen (like in the wood of an epoxy coated hull). Commonly called “crevice corrosion” it doesn’t produce a rust or residue, the crevices just get deeper until there is finally only a sliver of metal left. Galvanized: Bingo! The material of the working man. Galvanized sheetrock screws bite like a wild dog and do a good job of resisting corrosion while not costing a fortune.
