What type of experimental research method(s) is used in child psychology and why?

I remember one instance offhand where research was done to see if a cute child gets more attention and learns better and the answer is yes according to the studies. I don’t think it’s necessarily that it’s because the child is cute (although when they are cute they are usually dressed to bring out their good looks by their mother), and that better dressing brings out attention from others and once the child feels comfortable at fitting in and being liked they learn better (in school). so you see, some research needs compartmentalizing the whys and wherefores you got the answer you did.
