It’s the second Sunday in July, and many of Western New York’s best runners are gathering to take part in one of their favorite events of the year. They are not doing it in Buffalo, but in Utica. Today marks the 32nd annual Boilermaker Run, one of the most popular and competitive races in the country. “We always put it on our calendar,” said Dr. Jim Schaffstall of Buffalo. “We make sure we keep the weekend open. It’s just great.” The Boilermaker started in 1978 under the supervision of Earle Reed, who was trying to give something back to the community that had supported the family business, ECR Boilers. His budget for that first race was $750, and it attracted about 800 runners. Sources: http://www.buffalonews.com/sports/story/731153.
