What type of culture predominates among the typical citizen of Ciudad Guzmán?
This city was founded by the Spaniards during the Colonial period of Mexico. Therefore, it has roots that go deep into the XVII Century and further back. It has a very Hispanic layout in its downtown area. The people that inhabit the city and region are described as “mestizo” (combination of Indigenous and Spaniard) or “peninsular” (combination of Spanish and Mexican from Hispanic roots). There are no dominating pre-Colombian cultures within the immediate region. However, there are traces of several indigenous groups whose presence can be seen and felt in the many traditional Ferias that are held through out the year. The values and daily culture reflect a true mix of the colonial Spanish and indigenous ways of life. The city offers an interesting architectural contrast between the Colonial constructions and the modern ones.
