What type of clouds bring showers?
There are two types of clouds that bring showers. Nimbostratus and Cumulonimbus clouds. Nimbostratus clouds are dark, low-level clouds accompanied by light to moderately falling precipitation (rain although it can be snow and sleet). Low clouds are primarily composed of water droplets since their bases generally lie below 6,500 feet (2,000 meters). However, when temperatures are cold enough, these clouds may also contain ice particles and snow. Cumulonimbus clouds are towering clouds associated with powerful thunderstorms and often have strong rainfall, sometimes followed by showers after the main storm passes. The clouds that produce rain, snow and sleet all have the prefix ‘nimbus’ (or nimbo) in their name. Nimbus means cloud but refers to precipitating clouds.
