What type of clothing is considered “formal wear” for public functions for visiting American in Ghana?
Wear a light linen or gauzy cotton. I would suggest against wearing pants. As an ambassador of sorts, you definitely want to conform to the social customs of the locals. Definitely cover your shoulders. Sandals are okay, flats would be best. Check with local custom to see if they wear black or white to funerals if you have to attend…many cultures wear white to funerals. Formal would be considered anything you would wear to a formal event here, only downplay any sequins or flashy garb. Silks and satins would be wretched in that environment but by all means, most definitely make your formal wear longer dresses. I would refrain from wearing pants too much. Modesty is a key rule. If you want to show beauty, take extra time with your hair and decorate it well. Scarves would “dress” up your outfit too.
