What treatments are there for skin cancer?
Different skin cancers may require different treatments. By far the most common treatment is surgical excision. Melanoma is almost always treated with wide surgical excision, sometimes with sentinel lymph node biopsy. Sometimes chemotherapy and radiation are used in combination with surgery. Basal Cell Carcinoma and Squamous cell carcinoma are usually treated surgically. Excision, Mohs micrographic surgery, and curettage with electrodessication are the most frequently performed. Radiation, cryosurgery and laser surgery are less frequently performed. A new topical immune modulator cream is FDA approved to treat superficial basal cell carcinomas, but may also be used in special circumstances to treat other types of skin cancer.
