Hands on training is the best. There is a fair amount of theoretical knowledge that is good to pick up, and learning the ins and outs of various diagnostic programs is also good to know. Some training can be given by the auto shop in question… most dealerships will help train their technicians by sending them to various schools to gain the ASE certifications that are often required. Places like Firestone of America also offer training for their techs, plus there are many materials online that can be studied for the knowledge of the procedure even when the hands on skill is not learned at that time.
