What tools are required to replace the valves and hone the guides in a 95 Jeep 4.0 inline six?
If you’re going to pull the head to replace the valves, you might as well take it to a machine shop and have the guides replaced (if necessary). However, if you insist upon doing it yourself…. You’ll need a valve spring compressor, a small magnet (typically on a collapable rod, about the size of a pen), and a honing tool for the guides. You remove the valves by compressing the valve spring, removing the small “keepers” off the valve stem and releasing the spring. The valves should just drop out. Once all the valves are out, you can hone the guides much like you would hone any other cylindrical bore. Note: If your valve guides are worn, honing won’t help. You either need to get valves with oversize stems or you need to replace the guides.
