What to Name a New Watercolor Paper? Thursday May 7, 2009 I’ve had a sample of a new watercolor paper created by Griffen Mill along with a request for ideas for a generic description to fit it. Griffen specialize in handmade papers, and their newest one is a recreation of the paper used by some of the great 19th Century watercolorists, including Turner. The paper is made from hemp fibers (which are stronger than cotton) and sized with gelatine (a modern recipe so the paper is archival). It will be available in 90 and 130gsm, which is comparable to that which Turner apparently used. While it will need stretching so it doesnt buckle when damp with paint, it shouldnt if youre using pen and ink, sketching, or using only minimal paint. Its certainly light to carry around!
