What to expect in a yoga class?
A typical yoga class that you might encounter at a yoga studio might go as follows:
- You enter into a studio with meditative or kundalini mantra music playing in the background. Many also have incense and candles burning to add a perfume to the ambiance.
- The yoga studio will sometimes have a wall with mirrors to watch the instructor, but many do not include the mirrors, but instead windows for natural daylight. It will be a hardwood floor where you will need to place your yoga mat.
- When the class begins, if it is for beginners, your instructor will take some brief time to introduce themself and the practice of yoga. You’ll then likely begin with some light stretching.
- Your yoga instructor will explain the different positions and make sure that you are holding your positions correctly and breathing correctly. You’ll want to make sure that you do not push yourself too hard and stay within your body’s limit.
- You will work up a sweat and have a few moments of rest in either the "Child’s Pose" or "The Corpse." Some instructors end the class in the Corpse pose, which is laying down flat on the ground.
