What to do with 12 yrs old who was caught SHOPLIFTING cheap jewelry at store?
I was actually in the exact same situation when I was younger. I had everything I could want, but the thrill of shoplifting was just too much. For me it actually got worse and worse to the point that I was stealing hundreds of dollars worth of clothes. Nip this in the bud as soon as you can. Shoplifting was so easy and you could get a lot of cool stuff that maybe your parents wouldn’t pay for. What helped me was mostly the getting busted part. I got arrested and handcuffed in front of a lot of people, had to go down to the police station, and my parents had to come and pick me up. I was mortified! I also had to write a letter of apology to the store and take classes every Sat. for 2 months. I think embarrassment is the best way to go with a 12 year old. Make sure that anytime she is in a store she has to be where you can see her. Don’t let her go out shopping with friends for a substantial period of time. I was the same age when I got caught doing the same thing (it was make-up). I did it just for the thrill, and because I knew my mother wouldnt buy it for me. She is probably just rebelling or looking for a thrill. Nip it in the bud before she gets worse. My mother grounded me for 2 weeks – the first two weeks of summer vacation. I couldnt even leave the house to go get the mail out of the mailbox. That stuck in my mind forever! You could also ground her from entering any stores! NO grocery store, mall, or shopping of any kind!
