Acne breakouts can seem to happen overnight, but the truth of the matter is your acne breakout did not happen that quickly. Acne breakouts are a development from a process that begins within your cells. What Actually Happens With An Acne Breakout? What happens is, the pores and hair follicles become blocked. This blockage is caused by excess oil production by the sebaceous glands under the skin, coupled with dead skin cells and bacteria. All of this fills the hair follicles and pores and causes irritation underneath the skin. When your immune system sends white blood cells rushing to the area to fight the bacteria and irritation, you then have swelling, redness and pus in the affect areas. This is when pimples are formed. If the problem is close to the skin’s surface, your acne breakout will be minor to moderate. If the problem occurs deeper under the skin, your acne breakout may present as nodules or cysts, which are the more severe forms of acne.
