What time period was Oedipus the King written?
Oedipus the King was a play probably written about 430 or 431 BCE. It is thought to have been first performed in 429 BC. The story of Oedipus is older than that however. The Oedipus legend is mentioned in the Odyssey by Homer,probably written (or at least composed) in the late 800’s BC. It is set in the Trojan war which has never been reliably dated but occurred before the Odyssey was written, possibly as early as 1220 BCE.
