What time of the year are tornadoes most likely to occur?
For the U.S., May averages the most tornadoes, but over the years, April has had more deadly twisters. But they can happen just about any time of the year. Tornadoes are likely in the Southeastern states in the late winter and early spring. By mid-April they are more likely to occur on the southern and central Plains and on the northern Plains later in the spring and early summer. USA TODAY online has links to quite a bit of information about tornadoes, including links to historical information, in our tornado index. The index also includes a link to a National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center site with state-by-state records if you want more detail.
