What the Heck is Polarization, Anyway??
A polarized lens eliminates glare through a filter. A very thin film of polarizing material is sandwiched between two layers of lens material (or on top of one layer of lens in a cheap pair). This film, in effect, neutralizes the glare thrown off of reflective surfaces. It does this by being placed at an angle 90 degrees from the angle of the glare. Since glare is generally a horizontal effect, by placing the polarization vertically in the lens, glare is neutralized. This is why polarized lenses are of especial importance for fishermen; glare off of water is a totally horizontal effect, so polarization allows for more headache free hours of fishing. Polarization also totally eliminates 100% of UV radiation; many premade sunglasses say they eliminate UV rays, but often they do not do so. Always buy sunglasses from a reputable dealer (not from the guy with the table set up next to the exit ramp) to be assured of quality and protection.
