What the Heck is Kohlrabi?
Kohlrabi is a member of the cabbage family that will grow almost everywhere. Its strange name comes from the German words for “cabbage” and “turnip,” which is appropriate, since kohlrabi taste a bit like a combination of the two. If you think the name is weird, though, just wait until you see this strange vegetable. It’s shaped like a ball with several stalks growing out of one end. Many observers have likened its odd shape to the Russian spacecraft, Sputnik. Kohlrabi comes in green or purple varieties, and can be eaten either raw or cooked. It’s low in calories and extremely high in nutrients, especially vitamin C and dietary fiber, so it’s great for the immune system and for promoting digestive health.
