What the heck is a “dog ear” and when do weapons fail for “dog ears”?

Dog ears are little fabric “ears” that jut off of weapon covers when a rounded area (re: the rounded tip of a sword) is covered by fabric that was not properly sewn to fit with the weapon (re: the sword cover was sewn square even though the weapon it covers is rounded). They also exist on the configurations of some flail head designs. Dog ears can be dangerous because they can literally slash an eye (yes, it has happened several times), not to mention it is exceedingly easy to fix dog ears with a little resewing or some fabric tape. Dog ears on weapon covers that jut out to a point 1 inch or more will fail.
