What the Civil Rights Act did to secure greater rights for African Americans?
The Civil Rights Act did absolutely nothing to secure greater rights for black Americans. What it did was to insure that the rights of all Americans would be the same. It was really unnecessary because the 14th Amendment already insured those rights. The Act merely defined those rights and narrowed the interpretation. The Civil Rights Act, while aimed at gaining equality for Blacks, also helped whites to a much greater degree. While the Act made decrees such as ‘regardless of color, creed, national origin’ and such, it also did away with land ownership rules. That opened up the polls to many more whites that were4 previously excluded from voting, serving on juries, etc.
