What text editors are available on UNIX systems?
There are three editors that you will usually find on most systems: Emacs, vi, and pico. Pico is the easiest to use, but it doesn’t have as many features as Emacs or vi. Both Emacs and vi have their strong supporters; some experimentation will tell you which one is more suited to your own needs. Here are some guides that should get you started: • Emacs – A Tutorial Introduction to Emacs (A very thorough introduction, good for beginners.) • Pico – Basic Pico Commands (A quick overview of the pico text editor from Colorado State University that provides a list of links to other tutorials. The links lower down seem to be more up-to-date.

One really good one that has moved is the PICO Tutorial, originally created at NC State.) • vi – Vi Lover’s Home Page (A collection of vi information, tutorials and manuals, lovingly maintained.)
