the ti-83 (or 84) was all i needed up until calculus… but the ti-89 has the capabilities to do basic algebra (like factor and solve) and also it does basic calculus functions (which come in handy) so i would recommend the 89, because if you go to college after and take higher math courses that will most likely be the one you need so you may as well buy that now.
