What techniques are presently available for analysis?
There are a number of techniques available at present to determine the characteristics of historic mortars. It is common to carry out analysis using two or more of these techniques which together build a clearer and more accurate characterisation of the mortar. Some commonly used techniques include; microscopy, wet chemistry, x-ray diffraction and petrographic (thin section) analysis. More detailed and in-depth procedures can also been undertaken.
